About the 3rd Annual Distinguished Classical Excellence Awards Presentation and Concert

Every culture within America carries its own story of excellence. The Distinguished Black Classical Excellence Awards were created to tell one of those stories: the artistry, discipline, and achievements of African Americans in classical music. The performances on stage each year reflect the full range of American classical talent — but the awards themselves are intentionally focused on honoring African American musicians, students, educators, and leaders who have paved the way for future generations.

To properly honor their legacy, we present a breathtaking, Grammy-style tribute concert that breaks traditional musical boundaries.

The Javacya Elite is the conservatory’s advanced ensemble, founded on the principle of mentorship. Advanced students rehearse alongside professional players and conservatory faculty, working on the same music together. This hands-on experience allows young musicians to learn what a professional standard sounds like by immersing themselves in it, rather than merely observing from the audience. Many of the performers on that stage grew up in Javacya’s youth programs, and several now coach the students seated alongside them. This mentorship is the essence of the ensemble.
