Javacya Elite Chamber Orchestra
Javacya Elite is the conservatory’s advanced ensemble, which operates on a mentorship model. Advanced students perform alongside professional players and conservatory faculty, engaging with the same music and participating in the same rehearsals. This immersive experience allows young musicians to understand what a professional standard sounds like by experiencing it firsthand rather than merely observing from the audience. Many of the musicians on stage have themselves participated in Javacya’s youth programs, and some of them now coach the students sitting next to them. Florida A&M University
Florida A&M University (FAMU) has stood at the heart of Tallahassee since 1887, when it opened its doors as the State Normal College for Colored Students with just fifteen students and two instructors. Today it is one of the nation's largest historically Black universities, a public land-grant institution serving roughly 10,000 students from across the country and more than 70 nations. Its motto, "Excellence With Caring," still shapes the university's identity nearly a century and a half later.
FAMU's campus is home to Lee Hall Auditorium, the historic performance space that anchors the Distinguished Black Classical Excellence Awards & Concert each year. The university's Department of Music co-presents the event alongside Javacya Arts Conservatory, lending its stage, faculty, and academic weight to an evening built around celebrating Black classical artistry.
That partnership runs deeper than the auditorium walls. FAMU DRS — the university's K-12 developmental research school — is where the FAMU DRS STREAM Youth Orchestra rehearses and performs, giving students a direct pipeline from classroom to concert stage alongside working professionals. For many of these young musicians, that connection to FAMU is their first real exposure to the kind of institutional support and mentorship that can turn a school music program into the start of a career.
As the only public historically Black university in Florida, FAMU carries a legacy of opening doors that might otherwise stay closed — a mission that lines up naturally with the Awards' own goal of honoring the artists, educators, and students carrying classical music's Black excellence forward.
FAMU DRS
Florida A&M University Developmental Research School (FAMU DRS) is a K-12 laboratory school located in Tallahassee, Florida. Founded in 1887, it is one of the oldest institutions of its kind still in operation today. Initially established with elementary grades, the school later expanded to include junior high.
FAMU DRS's mission focuses on research and innovation in teaching. The school aims to conduct research, demonstrations, and evaluations related to the management of teaching and learning, with an emphasis on mathematics, science, technology, and foreign languages. Known as the home of the "Baby Rattlers," FAMU DRS has a legacy of academic excellence and community engagement. This commitment to development makes it a natural fit for the FAMU DRS STREAM Youth Orchestra, where the next generation of classical musicians trains in an institution dedicated to nurturing young minds.
